Heat Project

Today you will be continuing to work on the heat project. The outline for the project is below. You should write your anwser in Word Perfect on the computer or on a sheet of paper. The questions are below and the links for the questions are below the questions.

Heat and Its Impact on Me, My Family, The Community and The World

You
Winter Clothing
Insulated clothing protects our bodies and increases our ability to enjoy outdoor activities in winter. Research what science and technology concepts are at work in coats designed for use in cold weather? Next write a several paragraphs about the science behind winter coats and how they keep us warm. You may also want to include diagrams in your project.

Family
Heat Loss at Home
A well insulated home is more comfortable and costs less to heat. Reducing heat loss saves energy, and saving energy reduces the environmental impact of energy production. Research at least 3 areas of your home where heat might be lost? How can this heat loss be counteracted? What are the benefits of doing so?
(Your answer should be atleast 3 paragraphs long and you may want to include some diagrams also)

Energy Forms in a New House
Part 1
Your family is building a new home. Research the following ways that your family could get energy for your house and fill out the pros (good things) and cons (bad things) chart for each type. Think about the environmental and economic impacts of each.

Conventional
fossil fuel
nuclear
Alternative forms of energy
geothermal
solar
wind
wave
biofuel

EXAMPLE
Fossil Fuels
- getting energy by burning coal in coal fired plants around Ontario and then getting the energy through hydro lines

Pros / Positives Cons / Negatives
- inexpensive - produces green house gases
- done for many years

Part 2
Pick one alternative form of energy that you think would be good to install /set up at your house. (Don’t pick wind) Write a letter to you parents explaining why you think you should install this alternative from of energy at your new house. In your letter, be sure to include the benefits and costs from both an environmental perspective and an economic perspective.

The Community
Make a case for (or against) using rural land for wind turbine farms. Write a letter to the Wikwemikong’s Chief Mrs. Fox-Recollet telling her your opinion about wind farms. Are they a good idea or not? Make sure you include some facts you found when you researched the topic.

The World
Research the "Greenhouse Effect" what is it, how does it work, what are its effects on the planet. Write a few paragraphs describing the "Greenhouse Effect" Make sure they are written in your own words and could be understood by a grade 6 student.
Research where common green house gases come from and what can be done to decrease these gases on the planet. Put the information you found in a chart.

Ex.
Green House Gases
Ways to Reduce These Gases
Burning Fossil Fuels / Gas in Cars
- Walk or use a bicycle
- Car pool or reduce the number of trips to the store
- Take the bus
- Use a hybrid car
